SANDIPANI GURUKUL rehabilitates and uplifts deprived destitute and underprivileged children from broken homes and destitute families; children from the grassroots levels of society; children who are brutalized and exploited due to societal inequities. It is our Mission: “A Child Saved Today, is an Asset to Society Tomorrow” SANDIPANI GURUKUL is committed and dedicated to this Mission.
Located in a rural isolated mountainous region of the underdeveloped Konkan belt amidst the Western Ghats off the West Coast of India, SANDPANI GURUKUL is totally non political and looks beyond all castes, communities, creeds and religions of the children within our fold.
Broad visionary guidelines are set forth by our Board of Trustees, and regularly implemented by a Managing Committee. All our Trustees and Managing Committee Members work in a totally honorary capacity and are not reimbursed even for any travel, stay or administrative expenses, for the GURUKUL which they bear out of their own pockets.
OUR AIMS:
Our Aims are embodied in our Mission Statement: “A Child Saved Today, is an Asset to Society Tomorrow” Our Aim is to make Sandipani Gurukul a real GURUKUL, a Children’s University, in the traditional Indian sense. A concept finding increasing relevance in modern Education, that starts with learning, to fully train to control and direct the Mind. The GURUKUL caters to handicapped, under-privileged, and also highly gifted children, identifying and developing natural talents in all children and instilling the confidence in them to achieve their natural hidden potentials.
OUR ASSETS:
Our Assets are spread over 22 hectares (54+ Acres) of Freehold land and comprise of Children’s Hostel, Balsadan I, Balsadan II, Computer Training Center with Library, Children’s Conference Hall and Office, Recreation and Cultural Center, Quarters for Project-in Charge and Visitors Room, Livestock Shed, Vermicompost Sheds, Store Room, Agricultural School Hostel, and Staff Quarters (across river).
From a state of barren hill tops 30 years back, our Plantation Assets today cover over 330 Coconut Trees, 180 Mango Trees, 500 Cashew Trees, and over 200 miscellaneous trees like Jackfruit, Chikoo, Badam, Drum Sticks, Kokum, Acacia and a sprinkling of Cinnamon and Pepper plants.
Our main assets with unlimited potential are of course our children
OUR EFFORTS:
Children, who are orphans or coming from broken homes and in the age group of 5 years to 18 years are admitted, where we look after their total immediate needs of residence, food, clothing, education, schooling, books, medical aids sports and recreational needs etc. Appropriate and regular instructions and efforts in education, go a long way in giving the children the much needed emotional, psychological and social support to transcend their childhood traumas. For traditional education, all our children go to the high school at Tamhane and later on some go to college at Devrukh. Schooling is further supplemented by on the job vocational training in Agricultural skills, Horticultural skills, Dairy and Poultry skills and Music and the Arts and Crafts. Students with an inclination for further formal training, are sent to the ITI at Sangameshwar. We encourage our children to work with their own hands and be self reliant. This education and vocational training goes a long way in generating self esteem and confidence in them to pursue a vocation of their choice anywhere in rural or urban areas, where they can achieve financial self reliance and make them responsible members of society. It is our constant and continuing effort to try and bring our children in the Main Stream of Society and make them responsible contributing members of our Society
Our children are encouraged to participate in School and Zillah Parishad level and State level games, Physical Education Programs like Kabaddi, Cricket, Karate wherein our children have regularly gained recognition by way of Medals, Trophies, Certificates and Cash Awards
We believe and there is strong evidence to this effect, that if left to themselves in their formative years, our children could drift to large cities, grow up as street children and end up being brutalized into criminal activities or as labor in hazardous chemical industries, or even exploited as domestics, or physically mutilated into forced begging in Railways or public places
We try and ensure that our children are inculcated with Moral and Spiritual Instructions and Objectives to pursue and lead an upright life.
